Syncing brands from Retail Express to WooCommerce
What's changing
Your product brands in Retail Express can now sync into WooCommerce's built-in Brands field. Until recently this was a paid WooCommerce extension, so we sent brands across as product Tags instead. From WooCommerce 9.6.1 onwards, Brands is included as standard, so we can use it directly.
How it works
- We read the brand name on the product in Retail Express.
- If that brand doesn't exist in WooCommerce yet, we create it.
- We then assign the brand to the product.
- Brands sync when a product is created, when it's updated, and when its stock changes.
Your two options
| Tags (current) | Native Brands (new) | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it appears in Woo | Product Tags | Products > Brands |
| Best for | Stores already filtering or building menus around tags | Stores wanting proper brand pages, brand filters and cleaner structure |
| Requirement | None | WooCommerce 9.6.1 or later |
Things to know
- Brands are controlled from Retail Express. If you change a brand in Woo, the next sync from Retail Express may overwrite it.
- If your store already has brands set up, we do a one-off import of them first, so we match them rather than create duplicates.
- Switching from tags to brands won't remove your existing tags. Any menus, filters or SEO pages built on tags may need adjusting, so let us know before we switch.
Next step
Let us know which option you'd like, and confirm your WooCommerce version if you're unsure. We'll take care of the setup.
